"Ensuring our nation remains at the forefront of scientific research should be a top priority for all of us. It is for me, and that's why I take my position as the ranking member of the House Science Committee so seriously. New technologies and innovations drive our economy, solve pressing problems and bolster our well-being. That's why we must make sure universities, government agencies and private industry have the resources they need to conduct cutting-edge scientific research."–Congressman Bart Gordon, 2004 Champion of Science http://gordon.house.gov/ Guest Article in TSC's December 5, 2006 Newsline: House Science Committee Chairman-Elect Gordon Looks Toward the 110th Congress by Congressman Bart Gordon (D-TN), Incoming Chairman of the House Science Committee Science in the 21st century creates jobs, sustains our economy, enhances our knowledge of the universe and serves to better our everyday lives. It is the job of the House Science Committee to support that effort and advance measures that foster responsible, scientific progress. I look forward to being named Chairman of this important Committee for the 110th Congress. I can assure you that under my leadership, we will be the Committee of "good ideas" and we will continue to work in a bipartisan manner to positively affect issues from education and research to energy and security. One of the early priorities of the Committee will be to continue an effort we began in the 109th Congress to enact the changes necessary to keep America competitive both in the global marketplace and in the classroom. This year, I introduced the House's first legislation to enact the recommendations of the widely acknowledged Rising Above the Gathering Storm report from the National Academies (H.R. 4434; H.R. 4435; and H.R. 4596). We moved bits and pieces of these bills, but we can and will do better in the 110th Congress. I will be reaching out to groups like the Science Coalition to participate at every opportunity as we continue to shape the agenda of the 110th Congress and beyond. This is one of a series of columns from Members of Congress who have received The Science Coalition's Champion of Science Award. |
