ALEKS Corporation is a leader in the creation of web-based, artificially intelligent educational software. ALEKS assessment and learning technologies were originally developed by a team of cognitive scientists and software engineers at the University of California, Irvine, with major funding from the National Science Foundation. ALEKS is founded on ground-breaking research in mathematical cognitive science and applied mathematics. Through adaptive questioning, ALEKS accurately assesses a student’s knowledge state and then delivers targeted instruction on the exact topics a student is most ready to learn.

ALEKS has been used by millions of students in more than 50 academic subjects ranging from basic math to precalculus at thousands of institutions throughout the world.

UNIVERSITY-BASED RESEARCH CONNECTION:

In 1993, Dr. Jean-Claude Falmagne assembled a team of software engineers, mathematicians, and cognitive scientists at University of California, Irvine.

Dr. Falmagne’s team created the core of the ALEKS interactive software system for portions of the arithmetic and algebra curricula. In May 1997, ALEKS Corporation and the University of California entered into an exclusive worldwide license.

ROLE OF FEDERAL RESEARCH FUNDING:

Dr. Falmagne’s software was developed with support from grants from the National Science Foundation.
