The Science Coalition Applauds Rochester Institute of Technology for Recent NSF Grant to Accelerate Semiconductor Research

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Science Coalition (TSC) salutes the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) for receiving nearly $3 million in funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to advance research, development, and training in semiconductor technologies.

Led by RIT Kate Gleason College of Engineering Associate Professor Dr. Jing Zhang, the NSF-funded initiative will support research and training efforts for semiconductor simulation and modeling, advanced materials and devices, manufacturing and fabrication, and packaging enhancements.

“This incredible grant opportunity will enable RIT to prepare more than 170 next-generation semiconductor engineers and scientists with the skills they need to strengthen the nation’s semiconductor industry and advance America’s leadership in technology,” said Zhang.

The new initiative, part of the NSF’s Research Traineeship Program, will provide RIT graduate students with interdisciplinary skills to improve semiconductor chip development. It will also align existing training programs with evolving workforce demands to address semiconductor talent gaps.

“This significant NSF award will help the Rochester Institute of Technology arm the next generation of semiconductor engineers with the skills they need to drive new developments and breakthroughs in cutting-edge technologies,” said Jill Pentimonti, president of The Science Coalition. “The Science Coalition will continue to advocate for strong federal investments in fundamental scientific research so that institutions like RIT can continue to spur transformative innovations and maintain America’s economic competitiveness.”
