The Science Coalition Applauds Rutgers University for Earning $4.8 Million Federal Grant to Improve Care for Cancer Survivors

WASHINGTON, D.C. The Science Coalition (TSC) salutes the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and the Rutgers Cancer Institute for securing a five-year, $4.83 million grant from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to improve care for cancer survivors with cardiovascular risks.

The research, led by Denalee M. O’Malley, assistant professor and social work researcher in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and a research member of Rutgers Cancer Institute, builds on 15-plus years of rigorous analysis to help providers improve the delivery of primary care to cancer survivors. It will aim to transform cancer survivorship care in America by enhancing the adoption of shared care delivery models, which involve multiple clinicians from different specialties who treat and serve the same patient.

“For many cancer survivors, the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease surpasses the risk of dying from cancer,” O’Malley noted. “Therefore, it is critical that we emphasize a whole-patient perspective during cancer treatment.’

Rutgers joins three other medical centers across the country in receiving funding from NCI to enhance primary care for cancer survivors. The concerted federal effort has the potential to significantly improve cardiovascular risk management for cancer survivors with complex conditions, which can ultimately bolster long-term health outcomes.

“With the support of robust federal funding, Rutgers has a tremendous opportunity to help improve cancer survivors’ health and quality of life,” said Jill Pentimonti, president of The Science Coalition. “Providing sustained federal investments in American higher education research institutions can continue to pay dividends by delivering groundbreaking medical advancements and other scientific breakthroughs.”
