The Science Coalition Applauds University of Michigan for Securing $25 Million Federal Grant to Advance Coastal Research

WASHINGTON, D.C. The Science Coalition (TSC) congratulates the University of Michigan (U-M) for receiving a five-year, $25 million grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to research sustainability and resiliency solutions for coastal communities across the United States.

The funding will support the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) Science Collaborative at U-M’s Graham Sustainability Institute and focus on mitigating the coastal impacts of climate change, empowering local communities along American coastlines, and finding ways to better support coastal economies and industries.

“After a decade of hosting this program, we are thrilled that NOAA has recommended our continued leadership of the NERRS Science Collaborative,” said Jennifer Read, principal investigator at the NERRS Science Collaborative. “Under U-M’s guidance, the NERRS Science Collaborative will coordinate a national network of researchers, coastal managers, and community stakeholders to drive cutting-edge solutions to pressing coastal issues – from climate change adaptation to habitat conservation.”

The program’s inclusive and interconnected approach can help communities across the country and around the world share best practices to enhance coastal resilience and promote sustainable coastal management efforts.

“We’re proud to see strong and ongoing federal investments in the University of Michigan’s environmental science and sustainability research,” said Jill Pentimonti, president of The Science Coalition. “These critical scientific endeavors – led by America’s college and university researchers – will help us identify new ways to improve the resiliency and sustainability of our nation’s estuaries and coastal communities.”
