The Science Coalition Congratulates The Ohio State University for Receiving $12 Million Federal Grant to Expand Laser Technology Research

WASHINGTON, D.C. The Science Coalition (TSC) applauds The Ohio State University (Ohio State) for receiving a $12 million award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support the operation, maintenance, and expansion of the NSF National Extreme Ultrafast Science Facility (NSF NeXUS) for the next five years.

The funding will enable NSF NeXUS to continue conducting cutting-edge ultrafast laser technology research. This novel field of study helps enhance our understanding of the chemical and material dynamics of particles at the atomic and electron level. The NSF NeXUS facility houses a high-power ultrafast laser that is the first of its kind in the United States and supports groundbreaking research in chemistry, physics, and materials science.

“This critical program has created a new, highly collaborate paradigm for scientific research in the United States,” said Robert Baker, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, and director of NSF NeXUS. “We envision NSF NeXUS becoming a focal point for interdisciplinary collaboration – where Ohio State provides the hardware and the operational expertise, and where researchers from across the country convene and explore their own scientific questions.”

The facility offers a suite of technologies for studying chemicals, biomolecules, photovoltaics, energy storage materials, quantum information materials, and fundamental physics. Ohio State staff will support visiting researchers in planning and executing experiments that may not be possible in their home laboratories.

“This considerable federal investment in The Ohio State University’s ultrafast science capabilities will drive innovation across multiple scientific disciplines,” said Jill Pentimonti, president of The Science Coalition. “By providing access to world-class

facilities and expertise, NSF NeXUS will accelerate breakthrough discoveries and help maintain America’s leadership in advanced laser research.”
