Dr. Ashley Ross, an Associate Professor at the University of Cincinnati, is redefining the boundaries of neuroscience and immunology. With a background in chemistry, she has dedicated her career to unraveling the complex communication that takes place between the brain and the immune system, particularly in the context of the body’s inflammatory responses to certain pathogens and infections

A Spark of Curiosity: The Genesis of a Researcher

Dr. Ross’ interest in research began during her undergraduate studies, where hands-on experiences opened her eyes to the impact of science beyond textbooks. This early exposure ignited a relentless curiosity in conducting cutting-edge research. Today, she spearheads a multi-disciplinary research program at the University of Cincinnati that explores the intricate mechanisms of brain-immune communication.

Exploring the Frontiers of Neuroscience and Immunology

Dr. Ross’ research focuses on developing tools to measure how neurons interact with the immune system, particularly in organs like the spleen and lymph nodes. Her work delves into inflammatory response mechanisms, aiming to understand how these processes affect diseases like ischemic stroke, depression, and neurodegeneration. Using electrochemical tools, her team detects neurochemicals and monitors how these molecules interact with one another. The insights gleaned from these studies can inform the design of new targeted therapies for several different conditions.

Federal funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has been instrumental in Dr. Ross’s research. “Federal funding is extremely important,” she emphasizes. “Without it, this basic scientific research wouldn’t be possible and we’d miss a tremendous opportunity to unlock medical breakthroughs for a wide range of diseases”

Community and Mentorship: The Heart of Success

Beyond its scientific breakthroughs, Dr. Ross’s laboratory has built a vibrant research community that promotes strong camaraderie and collaboration.

Dr. Ross credits her outstanding mentors for instilling the importance of establishing a supportive research community to drive success and discovery in the lab.

Looking Ahead: Transforming Health and Disease

As Dr. Ross continues her research, she remains committed to expanding her scientific explorations with the support of robust and sustained federal funding and building a community of scientists who share her passion for expanding our knowledge about the interaction between our brains and our immune systems.
