WASHINGTON – The Science Coalition (TSC) today issued the following statement after the House Committee on Appropriations approved fiscal year (FY) 2022 appropriations bills for key research agencies, including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the National Science Foundation (NSF):
“Our federal research agencies are pillars of the American scientific enterprise, and providing robust, predictable, and consistent investment year-over-year is essential to protect and strengthen our competitive edge. In his budget request, President Biden made increased funding for research agencies a top priority and acknowledged the role of science and technology in driving our nation’s prosperity. We are pleased to see spending increases to each of these agencies’ budgets over last year’s spending levels, but these numbers still fall short of the president’s request,” said TSC President John Latini. “In partnership with these agencies, university researchers were able to pivot on a dime to address the pandemic marking the importance of a stable and robustly funded research enterprise. We encourage Congress to appropriate funding at levels that will facilitate growth in the STEM talent pipeline, drive next-generation innovations, and spur economic development.”
